Preliminary Data Analysis

SECTION 6 - TRANSPORT

20 What forms of transport do you use and how often??
Please answer this question using
D = daily
W = weekly
O = occasionally
N = never
Please use D, W, O or N PERSON 1 PERSON 2
Car
Car share
Bus
Motorbike
Bicycle
Taxi

This question had a high response rate. Of the 970 questionnaires analysed 942 had some response - 97.1%.

This data certainly gives some measure of car, bus and bicycle use. Like many questions, the positive is more useful than the negative - one would have to assume the large number of blank responses to 'car share' compared to 'car' is a reflection of how few share a car for transport and so people just ignored the question.

The above question seems to serve to show how little the buses are used by residents of Willingham.

22a If you do not use the bus, or only use it occasionally, can you indicate if any of these reasons apply tick+ Person 1 Person 2
Routes/destinations are not suitable
Poor service frequency
No Sunday service
Long journey time

Location of bus stops

There were 788 responses on questionnaires (81.2% response)

23 Which THREE factors, if improved, would encourage you to start using, or use the bus service more?
Please answer this question using
1 = most important improvement
2 = second most….
3 = third most
Please use 1, 2 and 3 PERSON 1 PERSON 2
Routes/destinations
Service frequency
No Sunday service
Long journey time
Too costly
Location of bus stops

To give a measure of which factors are most important an average has been taken for each response - NOTE - the lower the average the more favoured the improvement.

PERSON 1 PERSON 2
Routes/destinations 1.8 1.8
Service frequency 2 2
No Sunday service 2.4 2.4
Long journey time 1.8 1.8
Too costly 2.1 2.2
Location of bus stops 2.3 2.3
Total responses 690 409

The preferred improvements - in order of priority are

Joint 1st
More suitable routes/destinations & Shorten journey time
2nd
Improve service frequency
3rd
Too costly

In the table below is shown the numbers - person 1 and person 2 - who rated as '1' their most preferred improvement

PERSON 1 PERSON 2
Rating as "1" Total Responses Percentage Rating as "1" Total Responses Percentage
Routes/destinations 221 482 46% 132 288 46%
Service frequency 170 529 32% 101 319 32%
No Sunday service 20 139 3.6% 12 76 16%
Long journey time 207 466 44% 132 286 46%
Too costly 69 228 30% 42 150 28%
Location of bus stops 20 79 25% 11 44 25%

A convoluted and different analysis but which still shows the major problems are routes/destinations, long journey time and service frequency.

24a Which would be the most likely destination(s) or direction you would need if using the bus? tick+ Person 1 Person 2
Cambridge
Bar Hill
St Ives
Huntingdon
Ely
Cottenham
Other nearby villages

There were responses to this question on 831 questionnaires (total 970) giving a response rate of 85.7%. The table shows total responses.

Person 1 & 2 added
Cambridge 1132
Bar Hill 382
St Ives 403
Huntingdon 176
Ely 245
Cottenham 273
Other nearby villages 237

The response was left open so that people could tick as many destinations as they wanted so all that can be gained is an idea of relative choice.

25a When the guided bus service starts do you plan to use it on a regular basis? tick Person 1 Person 2

Perhaps

Response rate for PERSON 1 922/970 questionnaires = 95% response

Person 1 Person 2 Person 1 & 2 added

Bicycle 207 150 357
Rely on a lift 20 11 31

The large number who would cycle is a surprise given the usual low number of cyclists. Both car and cycle use must raise question as to how much car and bike parking there will be.
