In theory there could have been 7760 responses to this question (970 questionnaires multiplied by 8). Actually, 55 questionnaires had no response at all to this question leaving total responses of 7320. There were 1747 blanks left in questions partly answered. The best idea of response rate, since those answering could, and did, answer anything from one to eight responses, is to look at the fact that 915 questionnaires had some answer to this question out of a total of 970 questionnaires. This would be 94%.
It is difficult to know what to do with these figures. In particular how to deal with 'not at all' and those left blank. Can we interpret those left blank as meaning 'not at all'? Perhaps it could mean no opinion or possibly missed by error. The most transparent way might be just to show the four categories?
They could be shown individually for each 'crime' as pie charts
or each category could be compared
You may want to add together the 'a little' and 'a lot' categories - would this give a better idea of relative magnitude of concern.
| Concern | a little' + 'a lot |
|---|---|
| Theft | 634 |
| Assault | 294 |
| Intimidation | 548 |
| Vehicle damage | 559 |
| Vandalism | 660 |
| Drunkenness | 496 |
| Drug abuse | 346 |
| Noise | 484 |

'X' has been included in this table. It was used where instructions for the question were not followed, in this case generally using ticks instead of 1 to 5 for priority. 'X' could be ignored in many questions but is included here as this question was more incorrectly completed compared to most others.
It might be more revealing just to show those chosen as priority 1
Or even totalling 1 and 2

The response rate is not shown here as the high number of blanks will be due to those who have not reported a crime.
There were 397 responses, the implication of this being that at least (allowing for those who have been the victims of crime but failed to complete this question) 397 out of 970 - 40.1% of households who responded have been the victims of crimes or antisocial behaviour!
